Vestibular physiotherapy in your home

Has your doctor told you that you need vestibular therapy?  Are you are feeling dizzy, nauseous, and having balance problems?  If medical conditions have been rules our or addressed you may benefit from vestibular physiotherapy.  Vestibular therapy is specialized rehabilitation for the vestibular system provided by a physiotherapist with additional training in this area.  Unlike damaged tissue or bones, the vestibular system has little ability to repair itself.  Vestibular physiotherapy will promote a compensation process to help you overcome the symptoms.  The symptoms of damage to the vestibular system can be quite limiting.   Thankfully many cases are resolved quickly with only 2-3 physiotherapy treatments.

The symptoms of a damaged vestibular system

The symptoms associated with damage to the vestibular system may include:

  • Vertigo
  • Dizziness
  • Imbalance
  • Nausea

  • Cognitive changes

What is a “vestibular system?”

The vestibular system is part of the control systems in our body that work together to achieve and maintain balance.  It includes parts of the inner ear and brain and detects head movement.  The collected information is sent to the brain where it is combined with signals from the eyes, muscles and joints.  This integrated information results in a motor response (movement) that helps you maintain your balance.  Think about the last time you tripped on uneven ground.  Hopefully you didn’t fall!  That quick reactionary movement you made to stop yourself from fall is thanks in part to information provided by your vestibular  system.
