What Are Compression Stockings?

Medical gradient compression hosiery / stockings / socks / garments promote better venous flow which helps control swelling, varicosities, leg fatigue and other problematic leg conditions.

Compression stockings or socks are available in a wide variety of compression and styles.  From the treatment of medical conditions such as venous disorders and for those who have had a vein procedure to the prevention of disorder and and promotion of leg health including relief from tired aching legs and swollen feet and ankles and even to enhance sporting performance there are a wide variety of products to help you.

Compression stockings come in both men’s and women’s styles and sizing with many new colours and fun patterns.  Compression garments such as arm and leg sleeves as soon on many professional athletes are also available but are typically not covered by extended health insurance.

Who Wears Compression Stockings?

In the past compression stockings were typically worn by older people with circulatory issues that resulted in swelling of the lower legs.  As we discovered more benefits of compression therapy and the products evolved people of all ages and abilities are wearing compression stockings or socks.  In recent years the risk of a deep vein thrombosis while flying has drawn attention and many people now choose to wear compression stockings while flying.  Many of our clients using compression stockings and socks are working aged people who are on their feet all day or who are sitting all day.  Both groups report that their legs no longer feel tired and achy at the end of the day.

How to Get Compression Stockings?

Some basic compression stockings are available over the counter at your local drug store.  However, your extended health insurance will only cover compression garments with a compression rating of 20-30mmHg at a minimum.  These compression stockings will require a prescription from your family physician.  Once you have a prescription your legs will be measured and the appropriate sized stockings or socks will be ordered for you.  Turn around time can be as little as 24 hours.
